Coercion in the Globalized Economy
Tools such as ChatGPT, Bing AI, and Google Bard (collectively called Large Language Models or LLMs) represent both challenges and opportunities in the classroom. These tools have a lot of po- tential to improve your scholarship. But some students may feel tempted to simply plagiarize their output without adding any value of their own. In this class, I encourage some uses of LLMs while prohibiting others. As a general rule, I encourage you to use these tools in any way that makes you think deeper and I discourage any use that replaces your own thoughts with the output of a model. For example, I encourage you to use an LLM as a brainstorming partner, a writing assis- tant, or even as a research assistant. However, I prohibit any thoughtless copying and pasting of large language model output into your assignments without reflection or original input.
Differentiating Small Enterprises in the Innovation Economy:
The recovery which followed in the 2010s was, in many ways, uneven and highly inequitable, with growth not being equitably distributed across sectors, communities or regions. With areas and people feeling ‘left behind' while others benefited from the recovery, this resulted in social, economic and political disruptions. If we wish the recovery of the 2020s to be more inclusive across a diverse set of actors, then we need to adopt an approach that is consciously inclusive and allows us to build back the entrepreneurial foundations of our economies in a different, more equitable way. An effective and inclusive approach to enterprise support requires that we attend to corner stores and ‘main street/high street' SME businesses, not just unicorns and high-tech start-ups. It requires an emphasis on productivity and employment, not simply revenue growth or valuation, and demands that we consider differentiation in support as well as coherence and simplification.

In vivo compression and imaging in mouse brain to measure the effects of solid stress
We recently developed an in vivo compression device that simulates the solid mechanical forces exerted by a growing tumor on the surrounding brain tissue and delineates the physical versus biological effects of a tumor. This device, to our knowledge the fi rst of its kind, can recapitulate the compressive forces on the cerebellar cortex from primary (e.g., glioblastoma) and metastatic (e.g., breast cancer) tumors, as well as on the cerebellum from tumors such as medulloblastoma and ependymoma. We adapted standard transparent cranial windows normally used for intravital imaging studies in mice to include a turnable screw for controlled compression (acute or chronic) and decompression of the cerebral cortex. The device enables longitudinal imaging of the compressed brain tissue over several weeks or months as the screw is progressively extended against the brain tissue to recapitulate tumor growth – induced solid stress. The cranial window can be simply installed on the mouse skull according to previously established methods, and the screw mechanism can be readily manufactured in-house. The total time for construction and implantation of the in vivo compressive cranial window is <1 h (per mouse). This technique can also be used to study a variety of other diseases or disorders that present with abnormal solid masses in the brain, including cysts and benign growths.
