佐拉·尼尔·赫斯顿被认为是哈莱姆文艺复兴时期最杰出的作家之一[1],其代表作《他们眼望上苍》不仅被公认为黑人文学的经典之作,也是女性主义文学的经典之作和20世纪美国文学的经典之作[2]。国内外很多学者从女性、种族、文化、叙事等角度对这部小说进行了研究,但在故事中占有很大比重的经济元素却并未得到应有的重视。国内学者吕琪博士运用布迪厄的资本理论分析了这部小说中的资本逻辑[3];胡晓军博士透过这部小说分析了黑人女性的经济地位[4];国外学者阿比盖尔·曼泽拉分析了小说迁徙过程中经济与环境的位移[5];托马斯·哈多克斯运用乔治·巴塔耶的消费概念解释小说中的种种冲突[6]。除了上述学者,很少有学者对《他们眼望上苍》中的经济元素进行系统分析。事实上,经济元素不仅是小说不可或缺的一部分,而且贯穿了整部作品,承担着叙事功能。主人公珍妮·克劳福德的故事是她自己告诉朋友菲比的,她的第一句话就是关于钱的:“只要我银行里还有九百美元,他们就不用担心我和我的工作。”[7]良好的经济状况给了珍妮信心,也预示了经济元素在本故事中的重要性。本文将通过对《他们眼望上苍》中经济元素的分析,探讨经济元素在本小说中的叙事功能。
