The Department of Health and Human Services plans to launch a new artificial intelligence-driven initiative to review annual audits and potentially withhold billions in federal funding from states and grantees that fail to correct oversight deficiencies, according to officials.

The initiative will use AI tools built with ChatGPT and other platforms to analyze audits filed annually with the federal government by states, universities, and other grant recipients that receive more than $1 million in federal funding, reports The Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

Officials said recipients could lose access to HHS funding if they fail to address repeated deficiencies, weak auditing practices, or other oversight concerns that the department says could lead to fraud or improper spending.

The effort comes as the Trump administration renews its focus on reducing what it describes as wasteful government spending following the collapse of Elon Musk's DOGE initiative.

Vice President JD Vance has separately warned states they could lose Medicaid funding if they do not aggressively prosecute Medicaid fraud.

Democrats have criticized some administration efforts as politically motivated attempts to target blue states or programs conservatives oppose.
