Addressing the skills challenge will require interventions across the skills landscape and it was interesting to note that companies identified the importance of multiple skills development pathways. As may be expected, university routes have been identified as most critical but there was also significant demand for alternative routes such as apprenticeships, internships and CPD training. Interestingly, appetite for these alternative routes was more evident among larger companies, reflecting not just their demand for such routes but also their own experience in utilising them. Smaller companies were less inclined towards non-university routes, indicating that work needs to be done to communicate the value of these pathways for all companies, large or small.

The inherent risks of transporting treated tank waste liquids, the yet-to- be-determined plans for waste transportation methods and routes, and the uncertainty whether there will be any task-and-route-specific NEPA process are issues that require thorough public information-sharing and input, prior to decision-making. As additional preliminary decisions are made, timely outreach to and input from governmental entities, and Tribal governments potentially impacted by proposed transportation routes will be an important component of a decision process that is open and transparent.

In 2023, the FAA activated initial Data Comm en route services at five more air traffic control centers and enabled the first increment of full en route services at 12 facilities, allowing pilots on some transcontinental routes to digitally accept certain clearances from terminal and en route control lers on their entire flight. In 2023, the FAA also increased the amount of Performance Based Navigation flight procedures and routes available, which can reduce travel distance and time, and increase flight path predict ability. Arrival procedures with an optimized profile descent were added for 11 airports, bringing the total number of airports with the procedures to 64. The FAA published 30 new and 24 amended T-Routes as part of the Alaska Aviation Safety Initiative and made 169 new Q-Routes available along the East Coast. Reduced airspace separation criteria allow for great er airspace throughput and can enable more expeditious flight paths.
