Obesity is a chronic complex disease defined by excessive fat deposits that can impair health. The cardiorenal metabolic syndrome, which includes obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and fatty liver disease, is a target of GLP-1 receptor and/or GIPR incretin-based therapies. These drugs, tirzepatide (sold under the brand names Mounjaro and Zepbound) and semaglutide (sold under the brand names Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy), are now widely used for weight loss and diabetes, and as such, offer a hopeful avenue to treat obesity and its related diseases. Researchers at UT Southwestern have shown the GIP receptor (GIPR), a protein in fat cells, is a meaningful target for the development of future incretin-based therapeutic interventions for treating obesity and its associated metabolic diseases.
