The University of Kansas (KU) law school launched a program that will lend to students who want to borrow above the new $50,000 federal loan limit taking effect this fall for incoming law students.
Under the Jayhawk Endowment Law Program for Students (J-HELPS), KU law students may borrow at a rate of just five percent—well below the current 8.94 percent rate on federal Grad PLUS loans, which are phasing out this year as the new loan limits take effect. Moreover, J-HELPS is funded by donations to the university via the KU Endowment, meaning that the school will bear the losses, rather than federal taxpayers, should students fail to repay their debts.
If universities believe that the value of their education is worth the price of tuition, they should prove it by helping students secure financing above the new federal loan limits—ideally with their own skin in the game.
